About the course

Are you interested in doing some public engagement but aren't sure where to start?

Perhaps you have done some science communication and want to explore other ways to engage with the public?

Does your research raise challenging issues or controversy?

This course aims to inspire and support you to carry out effective public engagement that reflects upon the social and ethical perspectives of your work.

By taking part, participants will develop:

• an understanding of what public engagement is and why it is important
• an understanding of the skills required to carry out effective public engagement that is well organised and properly evaluated
• a greater understanding of the broader context of their work and a deeper empathy with public values, views, concerns and aspirations
• an awareness of the social and ethical issues that might be raised in the context of their research and how to engage with the public in relation to those issues

The course is an interactive day, combining activities and discussion to help you learn about public engagement. You will gain a better understanding of important considerations when you are planning public engagement but the course does not deal with the detailed practical aspects of setting up an event.

Course content will be delivered by BBSRC staff who work on BBSRC's public engagement programme.

Who can attend?

We provide public engagement training courses free of charge to any researcher supported by us, working on a BBSRC grant or based at a BBSRC-funded institute.
