We will be exhibiting at the The Big Bang Fair in the Energise Zone, Hall 3A, stand number EN6 – Can fuel grow on trees?
Can fuel grow on trees?
Can we grow the fuel we need for our planes and cars? This is your chance to discover all about biofuels and join in the discussion on the future of energy. Discover the exciting possibilities, as well as the challenges we face to make fuel from plants, by taking on one of the many roles, including:
Suitable for ages 13-19, this workshop is a chance to take part in a thought-provoking discussion on an issue that affects us all. Fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas are non-renewable and burning these fuels releases large amounts of greenhouse gases, which contributes to climate change.
Bioenergy could be part of the solution to these problems, but it raises questions such as:
- "Should we be using our farm land to grow energy crops when food prices are rising?"
- "How could bioenergy technologies impact on biodiversity, farmers and the economy?"
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a farmer in Africa or a scientist at the forefront of discovery? This free workshop will introduce you to the latest research and allow you to explore the various issues around biofuels through character based discussion. Where do you stand on bioenergy? Using a successful format of role-play and voting to address some of the questions and decisions that arise, you will get the opportunity to hear many different views and express your own opinions on bioenergy.
You will also get the chance to meet real scientists actually carrying out biofuel research and ask them their opinions. It is an ideal way to learn about cutting edge research and think about how science impacts the world around us.
A teacher attending the workshop at Rothamsted Research said 'It gets you thinking about lots of important issues'. The workshop covers environmental, social and economic issues across a range of science and technology topics covered in the biology, chemistry and physics curriculum from key stage 3 to A-level.
