As part of a programme of activities to mark its 20th anniversary, BBSRC has launched the Anniversary Awards for Excellence in Bioscience to recognise the excellence of the UK's world-leading bioscience research base, as supported and championed by BBSRC.
The Anniversary Awards for Excellence in Bioscience will recognise the outstanding scientific contributions made by researchers to UK bioscience in fields within the BBSRC remit, demonstrating BBSRC's support and pride for the research community.
The awards will be given to up to three individual researchers who have accomplished significant advances in one or more areas of research, of which the findings have made a notable impact on scientific understanding or practice. The awards are open to individuals with a track record of sustained BBSRC funding during the last twenty years.
In addition, a fourth award recognising Excellence in Bioscience Communication will be awarded to an individual scientist or professional science communicator who has demonstrated significant impact in advancing the public's understanding and engagement with bioscience. Each winner will receive a prize medal, as well as £2,000.
Professor Melanie Welham, BBSRC Science Director, said: "World leading bioscience supported by BBSRC has had a huge impact over the last 20 years, advancing our fundamental understanding of a wide range of biological systems, as well as driving the development and adoption of novel technologies and approaches. These awards allow us to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of researchers that BBSRC has supported".
Nominations from any source are invited by BBSRC from the research and science communication communities.
The deadline for applications is Tuesday 15 July 2014. For more information on eligibility and how to apply visit: www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/opportunities/2014/anniversary-awards.aspx.

BBSRC invests in world-class bioscience research and training on behalf of the UK public. Our aim is to further scientific knowledge, to promote economic growth, wealth and job creation and to improve quality of life in the UK and beyond.
Funded by Government, and with an annual budget of around £467M (2012-2013), we support research and training in universities and strategically funded institutes. BBSRC research and the people we fund are helping society to meet major challenges, including food security, green energy and healthier, longer lives. Our investments underpin important UK economic sectors, such as farming, food, industrial biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
