Animal welfare

What constitutes good animal welfare and how can we measure it? How do we know when an animal experiences suffering and what the effects of that suffering are? How can we work to improve the welfare of farmed and laboratory animals?

In 2005 BBSRC launched a 5-year, £8M programme to provide core funding for fundamental research to underpin animal welfare in farmed, laboratory and companion animals. The programme also aimed to ensure that this research could be translated into practical solutions to welfare problems.

Some of the key findings emerging from this research were featured in a recent article, 'Understanding animals, improving welfare'. This first appeared in the spring 2010 issue of BBSRC Business magazine.
