The science behind the exhibit

The future of farmers, the stabilisation of the global environment and the health of consumers are all inextricably linked to grass. Three distinct groups of the grass family; oats, forage grasses and the giant Miscanthus or Asian elephant grass do or have the potential to contribute to our daily lives. Scientists use breeding and selection strategies for these grasses and focus on their inner cellular secrets. The useful attributes that breeders select in the different grasses encompass every part, from the roots to the stems, leaves and seeds. Grass can also yield a veritable chemistry set of molecules, useful in the food and chemical industries.

The BBSRC-funded National Plant Phenomics Centre is located at IBERS, Aberystwyth University and is vital for further development of our grass research.
